JANE

(Figurative and Abstract Sculpture)

The sculpture was initially modelled in plaster to form a former over which the steel was welded. This sculpture was made after Eve and I used the same methodology. The curvilinear line is the same but made up of individually hand bent nails. I read about German Nail Men or Nagelfigur and was intrigued by the concept, but wanted to use the nails in another way, rather than hammering into wood, as with the Nail Men. The nails are only 4mm in diameter. So I needed to be careful welding them as they would easily melt to nothing. Jane stands on a cylindrical column, which is constructed in the same way as the figure. Eve has been exhibited at Girton College, Cambridge University.

Welded Mild Steel Nails.
